Secretary of State John Kerry said a temporary cease-fire agreement had been reached with Russia Friday that went into effect as the sun set in Syria on Monday.
The conflagration in Syria has become a little like a prize fight with a dozen players on each side and the referee trying to keep everyone in their corners. If one of them jumps back into the ring, they all do. However, unlike a prize fight, the toll of this literally epic struggle has been hundreds of thousands of human lives.
Agreements have been reached before—and they’ve been broken. There continues to be skepticism on both sides. But the primary objective at the moment is to get humanitarian aid to the hundreds of thousands of people trapped in parts of Syria that have been under siege for years, in particular, Aleppo. Let’s hope humanity can be the glue that holds this cease-fire together.
