(UnitedVoice.com) – Mass shootings are exceedingly common in the United States. Every year, there are hundreds of them across the country. Members of the Democratic Party have focused heavily on this type of violence and used it as a reason to enact more gun control. Recently, Reverand Al Sharpton made a remark about guns that is getting some attention.
Mass Instruments
On the September 22 edition of MSNBC’s “Deadline,” Al Sharpton spoke to host Nicolle Wallace about President Joe Biden opening the new Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Sharpton, who hosts his own show on the network, told Wallace that he thinks Vice President Kamala Harris is a “great choice” to lead the new office.
Sharpton went on to discuss the recent racist killings in Jacksonville, Florida. The suspect used an AR-15 to carry out the three murders of black people. The reverend claimed that “people cannot do mass killings unless they have mass instruments.”
That is verifiably false. There have been multiple mass killings in America and in other parts of the world that did not use guns.
Texas Massacre
In May, 34-year-old George Alvarez was driving a gray SUV when he ran a red light and slammed into 18 people in Texas. CBS News reported that Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda said seven people were dead on the scene. Twelve people were rushed to the hospital, and one of them died, bringing the total of deceased victims up to eight.
Witnesses at the scene of the accident said Alvarez called the victims, who were reportedly immigrants, “invaders.” They also claimed he intentionally ran into the group of people. Sharpton didn’t mention that crime in his anti-gun rant.
Bloody Nightmare in New York
In August, 41-year-old Edison Lopez reportedly used multiple kitchen knives to stab his wife and kids to death. Police officers responded to the scene after someone called and asked for a welfare check. They found the bodies of Lopez, 41-year-old Alexandra Witek, 1-year-old Calvin Lopez, and 3-year-old Lucien Lopez.
Mass Murders in Canada
In September 2022, 30-year-old Myles Sanderson allegedly murdered 11 people in a mass stabbing in Saskatchewan, an indigenous community that’s part of the James Smith Cree Nation. Originally, Canadian police believed 31-year-old Damien Sanderson helped his brother carry out the killings, but he was later found dead.
In addition to the 11 deceased victims, 18 others were injured.
Not only did Sharpton ignore the fact that murders are often carried out using a variety of weapons, he only focused on AR-15s. The reality is that handguns are used far more often in gun crimes than rifles. But it appears the reverend is unaware.
