Are We Rooting for Sports Teams or Their Politics?

Is Sports Getting Too Politicized?

( – If anyone had looked into the stands at a sporting event prior to the 2020 season, they would’ve seen a mix of fans sitting side-by-side and rooting their favorite team on to victory, regardless of political ideology. Now that COVID is rendering the seats nearly empty, it seems teams have forgotten half of their fan base.

Many in the sports world have become outspoken proponents of plans put forth by Liberals in Congress and, at least, equally as vocal about their disdain for President Donald Trump and his supporters. For example, the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens have sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) demanding he bring the police reform bill passed by the House of Representatives earlier this year to the Senate floor.

They reference the events in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and the as of yet only partially-investigated shooting of Jacob Blake calling it “yet another example of racial discrimination and police misconduct…” They continued on with the party line, saying the rioters, looters and arsonists are “peaceful protesters.”

Reactions from the public were mixed, which proves the team doesn’t speak for their entire fan base and that they are risking alienating Conservative fans who don’t support their lofty liberal ideals. Here are just a few responses to the teams tweet.

“Walk around unprotected in Baltimore City, get hit in the head with a brick, and then come back to me on how bad the police are. The black on black crime in this city has nothing to do with Mitch McConnell. Political Opportunists.” — Ben Woodworth

“How about you do something about the kids growing up fatherless who end up committing the crimes. That is where the most Reform needs to be accomplished” — Tom Clapsaddle

“Here is a[sic] idea why don’t they all become a police officer n give up their career. Since they can do so much better. If you speak about changes that need to happen do something about it. Like Pat Tillman did. He let his action do his talking.” — byron isaac

It seems the hard-left push started by people like Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and AOC — Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) — is beginning to gain traction. Former President Barack Hussein Obama set the table for Hillary Clinton to continue the move in that direction, but President Trump’s win in 2016 derailed those plans. This has caused many on the political Left to employ any tactic they can think of to “correct” what they see as the usurpation of their throne.
