(UnitedVoice.com) – On Sunday, America received shocking news about a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California that took the life of basketball legend, Kobe Bryant. Celebrity gossip site TMZ broke the story in the afternoon — reportedly before the families were even notified.
Bryant, his daughter Gianna (13), and seven others were on their way to a travel basketball tournament. The other victims have been identified by friends and local news as Gianna’s teammate Alyssa Altobelli and her parents, John and Keri. Also, another teammate of Gianna’s, Payton Chester and her mother Sarah perished in the crash. Pilot Ara Zobayan and basketball coach Christina Mauser were also killed.
Several reports indicate the helicopter was flying under Special Visual Flight Rules (SVFR). That means the pilot was allowed to fly in conditions that were worse than normal Visual Flight Rules (VFR). Reports state it was very foggy when the helicopter crashed into a hillside.
Meanwhile, in California, federal investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to release a preliminary report about the crash in 10 days or so.
Fans around the world are mourning Kobe’s death today. More than a basketball legend, Bryant was also a philanthropist and had a special calling to reach the youth of Los Angeles and all around the world. Through the Kobe & Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation, he promoted sports and community outreach around the globe.
