Biden Appoints VP to Oversee Controversial Border Crisis

( – It’s estimated that over 100,000 migrants crossed the southern border in February. Approximately 16,000 were unaccompanied minors, currently being held by Health and Human Services (HHS) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP). It’s an astounding number that continues to grow daily as President Biden blames former President Trump for the problem. However, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is putting the blame directly on Joe Biden’s past rhetoric and for undoing Trump’s immigration policies that were working.

As the southern border crisis intensifies, the administration is still refusing to call it a crisis. However, on Wednesday, March 24, President Biden appointed Vice President Kamala Harris to solve the problem. That’s despite Harris’s lack of experience with immigration and a muddy relationship with the CBP and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Risky Biden Appointment

During the announcement of Harris’s new role overseeing the immigration crisis, Biden stated that he couldn’t think of anyone “better qualified than this woman.” Based on what? While Biden’s border policy is terrible, at least he had experience with the issue. Former President Barack Obama appointed then-VP Biden to oversee the immigration crisis during his presidency.

Which actually makes an interesting point. There was a run on the border during Obama’s administration and now again under Biden’s. However, it was quiet during Trump’s as he moved to build the wall and force asylum cases to stay in Mexico or the country of origin.

Biden’s move to put Harris in charge comes with significant political risk, and it could make it harder to solve the problem with those who work on the ground. Trust may not run very deep between Harris, CBP, and ICE after a 2018 hearing in which Harris compared ICE to the KKK. Perhaps that’s why Harris plans to talk to leaders of the countries involved and not those who work to secure America’s border. These enforcement organizations have four years of experience that could be beneficial, but that doesn’t appear to matter much to Harris as she doesn’t seem to think highly of them anyway.

Growing Criticism Over Harris’s Role and Abandoned Policies

Unfortunately, Harris’s background attacking US agents in the past, combined with her far-left ideology, may hinder her ability to lead on the issue. Arizona Governor Doug Ducey fired away after the decision, calling it the “worst possible choice.” He didn’t stop there. He said the president demonstrated how unimportant the issue was by appointing someone “who flat out doesn’t care” and never recognized illegal immigration across the southern border as a “problem or serious threat.”

Former acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf recently said there were no longer any consequences for people crossing the border illegally and that Biden was treating the crisis like a “capacity issue” instead of an “illegal behavior issue.” Wolf said the Trump administration warned during the transition that if Biden rolled back Trump’s policies, it would result in renewed problems at the border. Seems they were right.

So, perhaps Biden should re-evaluate his options and re-institute policies that worked. However, he can’t do that because he might appear to agree with the former President — which in turn, might violate his leftist principles.
