(UnitedVoice.com) – In mid-April, President Joe Biden received backlash over his administration’s decision to keep the refugee cap at the same level as former President Donald Trump’s administration. The POTUS quickly backtracked and then said he was going to raise it, but he won’t have official numbers until May 15. Now, a group of Democrats are pressing for an outrageous increase.
According to an April 27 press release, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and 33 other senators sent Biden a letter urging him to increase the number of refugees in the country for this fiscal year and the 2022 fiscal year. The senators want it increased to 62,500 for 2021 and then 125,000 for 2022. They called the current cap (15,000) a “cruel legacy of anti-refugee policies.”
The United States must expeditiously and safely admit all qualified refugees who are waiting to be resettled. More on this issue and to read our letter to POTUS: https://t.co/yzbtf1lLOs

The Democrats’ demand comes as the country is facing an unprecedented crisis on the southern border. Tens of thousands of immigrants have entered the country illegally in the last three months while the country is in the midst of a pandemic that has killed more than half a million people. This is the worst time ever to increase the number of migrants flowing into the country.
