“Bipartisan” Lawmakers Visit Middle East

Northern Syria is chaotic at the moment, to say the least. Turkey’s aggression towards Kurdish forces finally came to an end after Trump imposed heavy sanctions. Now, Turkey promises to uphold a permanent cease-fire, but many entities are skeptical of this claim.

A Lack of Faith

Among those skeptical of the cease-fire agreement is House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Pelosi’s faith in President Trump’s handling of the situation is so weak that she took matters into her own hands. She and a small group of lawmakers recently traveled to Jordan and Afghanistan in an attempt to reassure our Middle Eastern allies.

The group met with Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to discuss regional matters.

A meeting like this wouldn’t be out of the ordinary if it weren’t so secretive and the group didn’t go unannounced. This is clearly a subversive attempt to go behind Trump’s back to enact Pelosi’s personal vision of American foreign policy.

Who Was Involved

Below is the full list of lawmakers who accompanied Pelosi in these secretive meetings.

Publicly, this group of people is being treated as a “bipartisan” effort to “smooth things over” in the region. In reality, only one Republican, Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX), joined this secret operation. How exactly a single Republican can balance out eight Democrats for representation is a mystery.

What Was Discussed?

What exactly was discussed at these meetings is largely a mystery as well. We know that many conversations in Jordan revolved around Trump’s actions in the region. The group also attempted to reassure our allies that America is still on their side, as if Trump wasn’t already handling that angle.

The group was also concerned with the Kurdish situation. The Kurds have been long-standing US allies in the fight against ISIS. However, within the past week, they’ve turned to Russian-backed entities for additional support.

The Consequences

At the end of the day, there’s only so much this rag-tag band of legislators can accomplish. Sure, they can provide reassurance of past promises and enact a few peripheral legislative policies related to foreign affairs. Beyond that, Trump has most of the jurisdiction when it comes to foreign policy and calling the shots.

Even though Pelosi and crew couldn’t accomplish much, they’ve shown where their loyalties truly lie. That fact is that Dems are now resorting to secret meetings behind America’s back. This level of subversion cannot be tolerated if America is to work together to build a brighter future.
