Black Lives Matter Movement Goes Dark

Black Lives Matter Movement Goes Dark

During the 2016 election cycle, Black Lives Matter coverage was splashed across every major network. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick buoyed the movement with sideline protests and the message was clear: White cops were killing Black people! But the question these days is: What ever happened to Black Lives Matters?

Election Results Matter

After Republicans made a sweeping victory across the political landscape, Democrats appear to have abandoned Black Lives. Of course, Dems were never truly on board anyway. Guccifer 2.0 exposed that Democrats were only using the movement to garner minority votes. Published emails from DNC officials showed a “lead from behind” strategy of meeting with small groups and the policy was to “Listen to their concerns, (but) don’t offer support for concrete policy positions.” However, Hillary Clinton did parade several Black Lives Matter figures at the Democratic National Convention while her opponent, now-President Trump, went all-in on Blue Lives Matter. There’s been little to no major democrats enjoying a photo-op since the Nov. 8 losses.

Reality Matters

While the Liberal media cashed in on the anti-cop rhetoric by highlighting a handful of police shootings of Black people, statistics tell a different story. Chicago has emerged as the murder capital of the U.S. The city recorded 762 murders in 2016. While 75 percent of those slain were Black, more than 70 percent of the murderers were Black as well. During the last six years, police accounted for only 92 fatal shootings, which is remarkable given the extraordinary amount of gun-related violence they encounter. And, half of those fatalities were by non-White officers. Even future Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis — who was once charged with murder himself — put out a viral video about Black-on-Black killings. The reality is that Black people are far more likely to be killed by other Blacks than cops.

Mainstream Media Takes A Knee

While losing an American to violence is regrettable regardless of their skin color, Black Lives Matter coverage all but disappeared after Hillary’s concession speech. No longer useful to sustaining an anti-GOP storyline, coverage switched to undermining President Trump. Keep in mind, Black Lives Matter protests haven’t stopped and police didn’t switch to squirt guns. In fact, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was blocked by Black Lives protesters from entering a D.C. school. But, the headlines were more about being anti-administration. Some mainstream media outlets have begun casting Black Lives activists in an unfavorable light, positioning them as resentful outsiders of the Women’s March in January. And, the minor coverage given to a major Seattle protest no longer portrayed them as righteous. Instead, numerous racist and violent Black Lives remarks were prominently quoted.
It appears that since the election, Left-leaning Democrats have ignored or thrown the Black Live movement under the bus. The NFL has taken a knee on Kaepernick, who remains unemployed, and the new Dept. of Justice policy is to fully back police. Black Lives Matter appears to have lost its credibility, usefulness and major media platform. Game over.
