California Tour Guide Accused of Spying for the Chinese

During an FBI counter-intelligence operation, a naturalized US citizen from China named Xuehua “Edward” Peng got stung. Peng was arrested for allegedly being an Illegal Agent of a Foreign Government. The FBI states that using hotel rooms as dead-drop locations, Peng would tape tens of thousands of dollars in a pre-arranged location, like the underside of a dresser drawer, as seen in this surveillance video released by prosecutors:

Peng would then leave the room for up to several hours while an accomplice would enter the room to retrieve the payment. The second person would either leave a parcel at the front desk that contained an SD card with classified information on it or tape it in the same location. Peng flew to China soon after and passed the stolen data to his handler. He is being held without bond pending trial and, if convicted, faces up to 10 years in federal prison.
