Have you ever wondered what the government really knows about aliens? From Area 51 to government agreements with universities that frequently track UFO sightings (yep, that’s a thing), you can review as much information as you like, even if it was classified as Top Secret. That is, as long as it was classified 25 years ago or more.
In 1995, Executive Order 13526 was signed, and included who, when, and how to classify information. Of course, they have always classified information to limit who could see it. But then, that pesky Freedom of Information Act went into effect and things changed. An amendment to EO 13526 included forcing the CIA to declassify Top Secret documents that were at least a quarter of a century old and had historical significance. As of the last day of 2006, the first documents were to be made available to the public — and technically, they were.
The only problem was, you had to head to the National Archives in Maryland to access them, and only during specific hours.
After much ado in the form of a lawsuit, crowdfunding, and a lengthy public awareness campaign in the name of the American people, these records were made available in CREST, or the CIA Records Search Tool, in January of 2017.

Now, you can see what the government really knew about aliens and UFO sightings 25 years ago, and with more than 800,000 files uploaded, there’s a lot they were aware of. The search tool makes it fairly easy to find what you’re looking for. Simply type in “UFO,” “aliens,” “alien sightings,” or other similar terms in the site’s search bar, and you’ll land on a page full of UFO or alien-related topics.
But, maybe aliens aren’t your thing. If not, you can search for any topic you like. From psychic phenomenon to spicy details about Richard Nixon’s time in office, the CIA “Reading Room” has enough to keep you enraptured for weeks.
