(UnitedVoice.com) – The Seattle City Council is moving aggressively to dismantle 50% of its police force. Councilwoman Lisa Herbold has come up with a way she thinks works best — and it’s a doozy.
She wants to keep all minority cops and fire only white cops regardless of their time in service. There’s a serious problem with this: firing officers based on their race is a violation of federal law under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The law states it’s illegal to discriminate against an employee or applicant based on their race when hiring, firing, terminating, promoting, or any other term of employment.
Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best released a video calling Herbold’s idea “completely reckless.” In addressing the 50% cut plan by the city council, Best said the council was offering nothing more than political gestures, and not proposing rational or realistic solutions to the city’s problems. She added that city leaders should not test a theory that crime would go away if the police do, and reforming police means meeting the needs of the communities they serve. This should be done through a comprehensive plan, not a budget cut.
On July 13, Herbold tweeted BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) were threatened with losing their jobs first. She said the police chief could request permission to lay off people out of order to meet the objective.
US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts once said the way to stop discriminating based on race is to stop doing it. Herbold should take notice.
