City Sues School District for Not Reopening After CDC Proves It's Safe

(UnitedVoice.com) – In some parts of the country, schools are still shut down after almost a year of virtual learning, and students are falling behind quickly. Approximately half of all students nationwide are in virtual classrooms. Worse still, in many districts there isn’t a concerted plan by school officials or state governments to re-open them or significantly improve virtual learning.

All this comes despite a recent report by the CDC that stated it’s safe for kids, faculty, and staff to return to schools. Apparently, “following the science” is only convenient when it applies to an agenda. Teacher unions nationwide are trying to prevent schools from reopening even though the CDC is pushing for that to happen. Now, one of the most liberal cities in America says enough is enough and is suing to force its school district to reopen.

CDC Report Says Science Confirms It’s Safe to Reopen Schools

A CDC study released in January found virtually no evidence of COVID-19 spreading through US schools that followed precautions, including wearing masks, social distancing and ventilating rooms. The 13-week study was conducted in K-12 in-person instruction classroom settings. It concluded that 7 of 4,876 students and 0 of 654 staff contracted COVID-19.

During a White House COVID-19 briefing on Wednesday, February 3, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said teachers do not need vaccinations before schools can safely reopen. The director previously said that schools should be the first to open and the last to close.

Teacher Union Dissent

Despite the science saying it’s safe to return to school, teacher unions across the country are refusing to allow teachers back in the classroom. They claim it’s not safe to return to schools, disputing the CDC. Some mayors and elected officials are saying that the unions are failing children and creating unnecessary chaos.

Unions overwhelmingly supported President Joe Biden. During the 2020 election cycle, only 2% of teacher’s union donations went to Republicans. Biden is not disappointing them. The administration acknowledges kids should be returning to in-classroom instruction. However, in an attempt to appease unions, they’re suggesting adjustments to timelines.

San Francisco Sues

To try to turn things around, one of the most liberal cities in America is suing to force teachers back to school. San Francisco filed a lawsuit on Wednesday, claiming the school district’s plan to reopen is “woefully inadequate” and isn’t meeting the state’s standards to reopen doors to students. City leaders say the school district refused resources and help and wasted the last 10 months by not putting a plan together.

The school district disputes the claim. However, what isn’t in dispute is that students nationwide are academically suffering. They lack preparation for life after the pandemic when colleges and employers will look for people with the education and skills necessary for good-paying jobs.
