Councilwoman Killed Outside Her Home

Councilwoman Killed Outside Her Home

(UnitedVoice.com) – A New Jersey councilwoman was killed outside her home on Wednesday, February 1. The motive behind her death is unknown, but it looks like a targeted attack. The victim, who was elected to the town council two years ago, has been praised by neighbors and politicians of both parties.

Around 7:20 p.m. on February 1, residents in the Parlin neighborhood of Sayreville, NJ, heard a series of gunshots, described as two groups of four to five shots each. Several immediately called 911; when cops arrived on the scene, they found a crashed SUV, with 30-year-old Republican councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour dead behind the wheel. Police say she had been shot several times as she arrived home, and after she was hit, the SUV rolled downhill until it crashed into parked cars.

Dwumfour was killed outside the three-story apartment building where she lived, the building backs up on the Garden State Parkway, and the Parkway itself can be reached via a wooded hill. Witnesses say after the shooting, they saw a man running into the woods; others claim to have seen a man in a hoodie run between two buildings and vault a fence. So far, there’s no known motive for why she was killed, but a local community organizer said, “It appears she was targeted.”

Dwumfour, who was of Ghanaian ancestry but born in Newark, took her seat on the Sayreville Borough Council in January 2021. She also served on the council’s Human Rights Commission. A single mother with a 12-year-old daughter, who had married Pastor Eze Kings last August, friends and colleagues described Dwumfour as a deeply religious woman devoted to her community and her Christian faith.

New Jersey GOP chairman Bob Hugin called Dwumfour’s murder “senseless” and a “heartbreaking tragedy.” Other Republicans praised her for her faith, ethic of public service, and a smile that “lit up the room.” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (D) also paid tribute to “a committed member… who took her responsibility with the utmost diligence and seriousness.”

Detectives are now analyzing Dwumfour’s cell phone and say they’re looking at “every aspect of her life” in search of a motive.
