Democrats Meet Iranian Diplomat Behind Trump's Back

( – While Democrats are known for their hypocrisy, this is a bit much even for them. It’s being alleged that Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) and several other Democratic US Senators met secretly with the Iranian Foreign Minister in Munich last week.

For two days every February, The Munich Security Conference gathers leaders from around the world to discuss international security policy. Both Murphy and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif spoke at the conference during a two-hour session. Both men took public jabs at the United States policy towards Iran.

In May 2018, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo outlined a maximum pressure 12-point list of demands that Iran would have to meet before the United States would consider removing stifling sanctions.

Murphy is a blustery critic of President Trump.

Other US Senators allegedly attending the clandestine meeting included Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and former US Secretary of State John Kerry (D-MA).

Hypocrite Murphy Accused Trump of Doing What He Just Did

If hypocrisy were ever on full display, this it.

In January 2017, President-Elect Trump was assembling his staff and preparing to take office. As part of the transition, future National Security Advisor Michael Flynn had a phone conversation with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kisylak. Reports began to anonymously leak of the conversation.

One month later, Murphy immediately began calling for investigations, claiming that a transition team cannot legally undermine the current administration’s foreign policy. Taking it one step further, Murphy said “any effort” to undermine US foreign policy ought to be “taken seriously.”

It seems Murphy has a short memory. By meeting secretly with Zarif, the senator potentially sought to undermine the US government. However, this may be worse than the accusations Murphy made against Flynn.

Flynn was speaking to the Russian ambassador to the United States. Murphy was speaking to an official representative of a state sponsor of terrorism and a country that has openly declared war against the United States and its allies in the Middle East and Europe.

Not Murphy’s Only Tie to Iran

Murphy speaks regularly at the National Iranian American Council (NIAC). The NIAC is a Congressional lobbying group with alleged ties to the Iranian government.

Senators Mike Braun (R-IN), Tom Cotton (R-AR), and Ted Cruz (R-TX) have asked the Department of Justice to look into the NIAC’s possible violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

They allege that the NIAC spreads propaganda and lobbies on behalf of the Iranian government.

There are also allegations that Zarif is a founding member of the NIAC.

State Department Responds

An official with the Department of State said that the State Department was not aware of any side meetings with Murphy or Iranian officials.

Former State Department senior advisor to both the George W. Bush and Trump administrations, Christian Whiton, said that if a meeting was not authorized by the president or secretary of state it would send mixed signals. He further stated that both Iran and the US know how to reach one another and don’t need an intermediary.
