Democrats Pass Controversial Bill in US House

(UnitedVoice.com) On Monday, March 1, Republicans in the Georgia House passed an overhaul of their state’s voting system. The new bill aims to secure future elections in the Peach State after the 2020 debacle. Two days later, Democrats in the US Capitol pushed through legislation that will kneecap the GA legislators and every other state that wants to pass similar bills.

House Democrats passed HR1, the For the People Act, in a late-night session on Wednesday. The bill has many provisions, but the main points aim to make it easier for people to register to vote and cast their ballots and more difficult for states to change their own laws. Conservatives say the legislation is unconstitutional and will impose unfair regulations on states.

Former Vice President Mike Pence believes it will make elections less safe.

Democrats claim they want to make the process easier for everyone involved. Republicans think they really just want to give themselves an unfair advantage in future elections.

The bill heads to the Senate now, where it will likely face a filibuster from GOP senators. Democrats will then need 60 votes to pass it, an almost insurmountable number in the evenly divided chamber.
