(UnitedVoice.com) – The border crisis has been raging almost since President Joe Biden took office. Critics blame his lax immigration policies for a massive influx of migrants into the country. He put Vice President Kamala Harris in charge of solving the crisis in March, but it doesn’t seem as though she has done much yet — other than to pledge hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to Central American countries.
Republicans have been calling out the administration for months, especially for their refusal to go down to the border to see the problem firsthand. Now, it’s not just the GOP telling the new president that he needs to do something to get the situation under control.
Democrats Demand Action
On May 5, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) criticized the Biden administration over the border crisis, saying, It’s clear that “not enough is being done.” She went on to say that her state is “bearing the brunt of this crisis” because the federal government has failed to address the immigration issue for the last three decades.
Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) recently joined Sinema and sent a letter to Biden asking that the federal government repay Arizona for the cost of sending National Guard troops to the border. The two are supporting Republican Governor Doug Ducey’s decision to send 500 soldiers to enforce the law. Projected costs could top $25 million.
The Biden administration has not responded to their request.
In April, the Biden administration released photographs showing a drastic decrease in the number of unaccompanied minors in a Homeland Security detention center in Donna, Texas. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) wasn’t buying it. The congressman quickly called out the administration for the misleading photos, saying all they did was move the kids from one tent to another. It turns out he was at least partly correct.
The Biden administration admitted the kids were moved into the custody of Health and Human Services but refused to say where exactly they placed them. Cuellar believes they’re in another holding facility.
The crisis has reached a point where even Democrats are sick and tired of the federal government’s inaction. Is that finally going to be the reality check Biden needs to solve the problem? It remains to be seen.
