(UnitedVoice.com) – One of the major chasms between political Conservatives and Liberals is the issue of gun ownership. The right tends to take the “shall not be infringed” clause of the Second Amendment quite seriously. The left thinks there are shades of gray, from the banning of certain classes of weapons to forced government confiscation of them all.
The former Barack Obama VP professes to favor limiting Americans’ access to certain so-called “assault weapons.” He invokes images of the undeniable tragedies like the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 and the music festival in Las Vegas in 2017 to tug at peoples’ emotions.
The debate over guns has raged for decades with the federal government taking gradual steps towards limiting access and some lower-level governments like the State of California and the City of Chicago enacting stricter laws. This has been countered by other states that allowed their citizens to apply for and receive Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) permits.
Biden’s official position on the issue places him in the center-left of the Progressive Liberal point of view. However, he may have signaled a willingness to change to a more aggressive stance. Perhaps this is an effort to court the apparently large segment of the Democratic Party that has embraced the Socialist/Communist positions of Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT).
At a rally held the night before Super Tuesday voting, Biden was joined by three of the people who left the race: former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX). While addressing the Texas politician, he said:
“You’re gonna take care of the gun problem with me. You’re gonna be the one that leads this effort. I’m counting on ya. I’m counting on ya. We need you badly — the state needs you, the country needs you, you’re the best.”
The reason this might be disconcerting is O’Rourke’s public stance on gun control. Given most peoples’ image of the prototypical Texan, they might be surprised at how far he would go.
Before he abandoned his attempt to win the White House, O’Rourke made some very strong pronouncements during debates and subsequent news interviews. Included in his proposals was the idea that every owner of an AR-15 or AK-47 would have to “sell” them to the government or face having law enforcement show up to, as he put it, “make sure that it’s purchased.” News flash Beto: if somebody is required to give you something, just because you throw them a few bucks does not make it anything less than confiscation.
Biden is trying to portray himself as a moderate, far from Sanders’ radical Socialism. However, one must question that representation based on this. If it’s true, then why say a man who has proclaimed his desire to break the law and completely disregard the Constitution of the United States would be in charge of ANY project within his administration?
