DOJ Refuses to Investigate Another State for Covid Nursing Home Deaths

(UnitedVoice.com) – In March 2020, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) issued an order directing nursing homes to accept COVID-19 positive patients. It was an ill-fated decision that led to outbreaks and deaths. The Justice Department recently signaled it’s not going to investigate to determine whether the governor violated the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act.

On Friday, July 23, Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY), the lawmaker who called for the probe, received a letter from Deputy Assistant Attorney General Joe Gaeta informing him of the decision by the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division. According to Gaeta, the division asked for and received information about the nursing homes in NY and after reviewing it, decided not to pursue charges based on violations of the patients’ civil rights. The Democratic governors of Michigan and Pennsylvania received similar letters last week.

Zeldin was furious when he heard the news. He released a statement attacking the DOJ for its decision, saying the “families and loved ones of the victims” deserved an investigation to find out the truth. Instead, he accused the agency of choosing to “willfully participate in the effort to deny the public answers and accountability.”

Nobody even knows how many deaths in the nursing homes across those states are the result of the Democratic governors’ directives. The families deserve to know whether the deaths of their loved ones were the fault of the government. Now they may never find out.
