(UnitedVoice.com) — Facebook announced via a blog post on Thursday, Jan. 9, that it will not change its rules about politicians lying in political ads or how campaigns direct those ads at voters.
Rob Leathern, who runs Facebook’s political ad library, wrote:
“Ultimately, we don’t think decisions about political ads should be made by private companies, which is why we are arguing for regulation that would apply across the industry. In the absence of regulation, Facebook and other companies are left to design their own policies.”
Leathern did disclose that Facebook is working on a way for users to choose how campaigns target their ads. Currently, most campaigns upload lists of information containing email addresses and names. Facebook then helps them find the profiles belonging to those people so that the campaign knows exactly who to target.
According to Leathern, in the future users will be able to opt-out of seeing targeted ads.
