FBI Release Hits Democrats Where it Hurts Just Weeks Before Midterm Elections
(UnitedVoice.com) – The midterm elections are just weeks away. Republicans hope to take back control of Congress and stop President Joe Biden’s agenda. One of the ways the Right hopes to convince voters to choose its candidates is by painting the Left as being soft on crime. Given the “defund the police” movement and many Democrats’ responses toward the 2020 riots, that hasn’t been a tricky needle to thread.
The FBI might have just made the GOP’s job even easier with a damning report about the rise in crime around the country.
On October 5, the federal agency released its Crime in the Nation Summary, showing the murder rate shot up 4.3% in 2021. The number of murders increased from 22,000 in 2020 to 22,900 last year. It wasn’t just the rate of homicides that rose; the number of rape cases was also up. However, the report didn’t specify how many more people were victims of sexual assault. Overall, the violent crime rate decreased by 1% across the country from 1,326,600 in 2020 to 1,313,200 last year.
Some news outlets pointed out the rates could be higher. Over 40% of the law enforcement agencies in America failed to contribute to the report. As a result, the FBI is missing data. Los Angeles and New York City are among the cities that didn’t participate. It’s not because those cities haven’t released their numbers to the public.
NYC had 485 murders in 2021, a 4% increase from 2020’s 468 killings. In LA, the city recorded 397 homicides in 2021, a 12.5% rise over 2020. It’s also notable that Democrats control America’s two largest cities at the local and state levels.
There’s a concern that undercounted data has made the report untrustworthy. Violence Policy Center Executive Director Josh Sugarmann told the New York Post the voluntary reporting system has yielded the “least amount of information available that we’ve ever seen” even though some non-participating states have “the most comprehensive reporting systems in place.”
What Does This Mean for the Midterms?
Even though the data is incomplete, it’s clear the rates of rapes and murders are up nationwide. The American people have consistently named crime as one of their most important issues. Although there is no definitive prediction on how the midterms will go, this is certainly not good news for lawmakers on the Left, especially in districts that have seen spikes.
What do you think about the FBI’s numbers? Do you think it will have an effect on the midterm elections?
