After 7 months of investigating the details of the gay nightclub shooting that took place in Florida last June, the FBI had enough evidence to issue a warrant for the arrest of Noor Salmon. Salmon is the widow of Omar Mateen, the gunman responsible for the deaths of 49 people. Today, Salmon faces federal charges, including obstruction of justice as well as aiding and abetting her husband in his efforts to provide material support to ISIS.
While Salmon claims to have had no knowledge of what her husband was planning that night, authorities believe that she could have stopped the attack.
Mateen made several Facebook posts in the days before the attack. One post, reported by CNN made it clear that Mateen was planning or knew of an attack.
”In the next few days you will see attacks from the Islamic state in the usa.”
It’s hard to believe that while the entire world of Facebook was made aware that something was about to take place, his own wife had no prior knowledge of his plans. And, it gets worse.
In the weeks before the shooting, Omar went on a spending spree, buying his wife expensive jewelry, and stocking up on guns and ammunition.
Noor Salmon has always presented a situation of domestic violence and control, and Mateen’s ex-wife, Sitora Yusufiy, has offered her own accounts of abuse at the hands of Mateen. Some speculate that Mateen questioned his own sexuality, which would explain some of the abuse as well as making Pulse, a gay nightclub, his target. But, does that justify Salmon’s silence?
Salmon has already stated that Mateen told her he wanted to commit an jihadist act. The question is, why didn’t she report that to the authorities? And when he texted her from the nightclub to ask her if she had seen it on the news yet, what, if anything, stopped her from calling the police then?
