GOP Calls on George Santos To Step Down Immediately

(UnitedVoice.com) – Constituents elected Rep. George Santos (R-NY) to Congress in November. A month after he won the race to represent parts of Queens and Long Island, a bombshell report revealed he’d fabricated much of his résumé, including his alleged Jewish heritage. Republicans are now calling for him to resign from his position.

On January 11, Nassau County Republican Committee leaders held a press conference to discuss Santos. The party’s chairman, Joseph Cairo, told the press the congressman ran a “campaign of deceit, lies, and fabrication.” He added that the freshman lawmaker “disgraced the House of Representatives.”

Cairo called on Santos to resign, saying he had no business serving the public in any capacity, not even as an elected official. Dozens of Conservatives joined him at the press conference and spoke out against the congressman.

Santos took his oath of office last week after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) won the race for Speaker of the House. Though he has faced calls to resign, he has rejected them. In a tweet, the new lawmaker said the people of his district elected him.

Speaker McCarthy has not called on the congressman to resign. However, he recently spoke about concerns from lawmakers concerning the possibility of Santos sitting on top committees where he might have access to sensitive information. NBC News reported the Republican leader said, “No,” when asked if the New York congressman would sit on the important committees.

However, Santos will sit on at least one of the lower-level committees. One Republican lawmaker said he thinks the Small Business Committee “would be fine,” but he “probably shouldn’t be on Intelligence or [the House Armed Services Committee].”

In addition to all the other trouble, the Campaign Legal Center (CLC) has filed a complaint against him with the FEC for possible campaign finance violations.
