GOP Lawmakers Move to Cut EcoHealth Alliance Grants

(UnitedVoice.com) – Republicans have spent more than a year looking into the connection between EcoHealth Alliance and the COVID-19 pandemic. The research organization stands accused of misusing government grants to do gain-of-function research. Lawmakers are now looking to ban the entity from receiving more grants.

On October 7, a group of GOP lawmakers sent a letter to the Nationals Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) demanding they terminate grants to EcoHealth. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) led the group of Conservatives in its effort to prevent the use of more taxpayer dollars in funding the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

The letter states the lab is the likely source of the COVID-19 outbreak, an allegation that hasn’t been proven but is possible. Lawmakers point out there are questions about whether the lab is adhering to proper safety standards or whether it’s conducting research for the Chinese Communist Party. They also talk about EcoHealth’s issues with transparency. Particularly when the NIH asked for information about its research, the organization called its questions “inappropriate.”

The GOP members are requesting that the NIH and NSF terminate their relationship with EcoHealth. They said it’s necessary to “protect taxpayer funding and end dangerous experiments that jeopardize public health.”

Do you agree with the lawmakers?
