As if teachers don’t have it hard enough in our country, Kamala Harris just introduced legislation that would encourage schools to add an extra 3 hours to each school day.
Harris wants to offer $5 million in grants for schools to develop additional academic or athletic opportunities for students. The catch? Schools would have to stay open until 6 pm.
Kamala Harris is just wrong. Students simply should not be at school for 10 hours a day.
And I know this is something that progressives care very much about, so let me add this: Europe would laugh at us.

When asked about the legislation, Harris said,
“My mother raised my sister and me while working demanding, long hours. So, I know firsthand that, for many working parents, juggling between school schedules and work schedules is a common cause of stress and financial hardship. … My bill provides an innovative solution that will help reduce the burden of childcare on working families.”
The bill also promises to invest $1 billion in summer learning programs but insists that teachers will not be forced to work longer hours.
Harris hasn’t said how she plans to keep schools open longer without the help of teachers. Perhaps this money should go towards things like teacher’s salaries, books and school vouchers so parents can actually choose where their children go to school. Now that would be progress!
