(UnitedVoice.com) – California is the third largest state in the union. It’s also the most populated, with more than 39 million residents. Several organizations that want to break the state up have popped up, arguing it’s too large. In the last several years, a new movement was created with the aim of splitting it into two entities.
New California State is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization that seeks to break away from California to become the 51st state. According to the “About” section of its website, the group believes the US Constitution gives it the right to break away from the current state to create a new one, much like West Virginia once did.
Further, Article IV, section 4 of the Constitution guarantees the state government will protect the states against an invasion, which it has not done.
The “About” section also says the California government has defaulted on the part of the Constitution that promises to stop an “invasion and domestic violence.” It has also failed with regard to the poverty rate, income tax, quality of life, homeless rate, gas taxes, business climate, and education.
In 2018, USA Today reported the founders of New California declared their independence from California. They read their very own Declaration of Independence. A document written by the group claims, “The current state of California has become governed by a tyranny.”
CBS News reported New California Founder Robert Paul Preston said the state has “been ungovernable for a long time.”
The Constitution allows for the division of states, but it is very difficult. First, the state’s legislature must agree to the split. The proposal would have to go before Congress, which would also have to approve it.
Though New California has not yet succeeded in separating from California, the organization is still active and has regular meetings.
