Jim Jordan Corners Democratic Rep Over Border Security

(UnitedVoice.com) – There’s no denying the situation at the Southern border is a mess. Millions of undocumented immigrants have poured across it since President Joe Biden took office. States are setting up their own barriers and placing their own law enforcement officers there to try to stem the flow. At least one Democrat believes everything is great — and her Republican colleague was having none of it.

On May 23, a House Judiciary subcommittee held a hearing on the border crisis. During the meeting, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) claimed the Republican Party passed an “extreme, cruel, and unworkable border bill” and has spent “weeks fear mongering about the border,” even claiming it’s open.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) was shocked by what he heard. The Republican lashed out at Jayapal, laughing at the idea that the border is secure. He told her that Border Patrol has encountered over 5.5 million illegal immigrants at the US-Mexico border since Biden’s inauguration. Further, he said over 1.5 million others have crossed the border undetected, claiming that number included people on the terrorist watch list, gang members, and drug dealers. “That is not a secure border,” the congressman said.

Jordan didn’t cite his source for his claim about the number of people crossing the border undetected. Generally, the government doesn’t have much information on those individuals because they were not caught or identified.

However, Customs and Border Protection does keep really detailed records of actual encounters. According to the agency’s data, agents have encountered over 5.2 million migrants at the Southern border since Biden took office. Further data shows more than 3.5 million of those migrants were expelled from the country. That means about 1.7 million immigrants were released into the US to await hearings.

Those migrants have put a significant strain on resources in border communities and cities across the country. Republicans want the government to start taking accountability and secure the border to prevent that from continuing.
