Judge Gets Warning for Religious Beliefs

A judge in Texas has received a warning from the state’s Commission on Judicial Conduct because she refuses to perform same-sex marriages.

McLennan County Justice of the Peace Dianne Hensley said that because she’s Christian, her conscience won’t allow her to perform the weddings and she believes that she should receive a religious exemption.

In the warning given to Hensley, the Commission on Judicial Conduct claims that she is violating the Texas Code of Judicial Conduct. The code states that “A judge shall conduct all of the judge’s extra-judicial activities so that they do not cast reasonable doubt on the judge’s capacity to act impartially as a judge.”

A local paper reported that the original complaint against Hensley was made by the commission and not anyone from the public.
