Judge Drops the Hammer on Student Loan Forgiveness
(UnitedVoice.com) – In August, President Joe Biden announced a plan to forgive the student loan debt of millions of Americans. People could receive either $10,000 or $20,000 based on a number of factors. However, the administration is no longer accepting applications for the program after a recent court ruling.
On Thursday, November 10, US District Judge Mark Pittman struck down the student debt relief program. The judge called it an overreach of the president’s authority and wrote that the country is “not ruled by an all-powerful executive with a pen and a phone.” The judge went on to say the Constitution is the law of the land, and it created three branches of government for a reason. Ultimately, Pittman declared Biden’s program “an unconstitutional exercise of Congress’s legislative power” that “must be vacated.”

The Department of Education’s website stated it was no longer accepting applications from Americans seeking to have their debt erased. However, the message on the site also told visitors the administration is “seeking to overturn” the rulings blocking the program.
NPR reported Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, said the administration “strongly disagree[s]” with the court’s decision.
