Lizzo Threatens to Quit Music After Being Bullied

( – Lizzo is one of the hottest singers in the country right now, having topped the charts with hits like “Truth Hurts” and “About Damn Time.” The Detroit native has also dealt with incessant bullying throughout her career. She recently spoke out about it after someone posted a mean tweet about her online.

On May 29, Layah Heilpern, a crypto expert, posted an undated video of Lizzo performing with a caption wondering how the singer was “THIS fat when she’s constantly moving this much on stage.” She then mused about the artist’s diet and punctuated it with a laughing emoji. In reply to someone’s comment, she suggested the singer must eat fast food a lot.

Lizzo responded to the mean tweet by saying she stopped eating fast food years ago. She pointed out that every time she logs onto the internet, she sees comments like the one Heilpern made and declared she was starting to “hate the world.”

In follow-up tweets. Lizzo said she sometimes wanted to leave the music industry and live on a farm. She also responded to the claims that being overweight was her brand. She said she’s always “led with music” and “BEING FAT IS WHAT MY BODY LOOKS THAT. THATS [sic] IT. THATS [sic] ALL.” The Grammy winner made all of her tweets private after the attacks on her body.

According to the CDC, roughly 41% of Americans are obese. The disorder increases a person’s risk of heart attack, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, and even certain forms of cancer. In 2013, the American Medical Association voted to recognize obesity as a disease rather than treat patients as they lack willpower. A decade later, there remains a stigma against it, both in the medical community and among average citizens, which often leads to bullying.

For Lizzo, her push to promote body positivity has led to near-constant bullying. In her remarks on Twitter, she said the love she receives on social media doesn’t “outweigh the Hate […] all because I’m fat??? This is CRAZY.”
