This Top Democrat Will Reportedly Run If Biden Doesn’t

(UnitedVoice.com) – President Joe Biden has repeatedly said he intends to run for a second term in office, most recently in a CBS “60 Minutes” interview. However, he has stopped short of officially declaring his candidacy. His low approval ratings and advanced age have led to speculation about whether he will actually throw his hat into the ring. Vice President Kamala Harris, who would generally run as his successor, also suffers from dismal ratings.

The rumors that Biden won’t run again and that Harris appears tarnished have opened possibilities for other Democrats who might have a shot at the party’s nomination. Reports indicate the governor of the most progressive state might run.

A California Challenger

On September 19, The Wrap’s Tina Daunt reported California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) would challenge Harris for the Democratic nomination if Biden sits out. A source close to the state leader said some insiders expect the president to announce he isn’t going to seek a second term after the midterm elections are over, and once he does that, Newsom “absolutely is going to announce that he is running,” there are “[n]o ifs, ands, or buts” about it.

Newsom is currently running for reelection against Republican state Senator Brian Dahle. FiveThirtyEight shows the governor beating his challenger by extensive margins. The election comes a year after he defeated a recall election in the Golden State.

The governor has also already started targeting potential Republican challengers. In a commercial released around Independence Day, Newsom attacked Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), telling Floridians “freedom is under attack in” the Sunshine State.

While Democrats might want Newsom to run, the GOP will likely fight hard to keep him out of the Oval Office.

Republican Opposition

While many know Newsom for his liberal policies, like pushing an initiative to ban the sale of gas-powered vehicles in his state, others know him better for the extreme COVID-19 lockdowns he advocated and enforced. Multiple entities sued the governor during the pandemic for limiting state residents’ rights. For example, he banned indoor church services for months until the Supreme Court stepped in and stopped him.

The Democrat also forced businesses to remain closed for months while he claimed his administration was trying to stop the spread. He put vaccine mandates in place and kept kids out of school for months, causing terrible effects for many children. He would almost certainly carry his far-left policies into the White House if elected president.

What do you think about the possibility of Newsom becoming president?
