Mike Pence Likens Defund the FBI to Leftist Defund the Police

Mike Pence’s Latest SPIN On FBI Raid Is Raising Eyebrows

(UnitedVoice.com) – After the FBI raided Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate on August 8, many Conservatives became outraged at the hypocrisy of the FBI and the federal government. In 2016, then-FBI director James Comey slammed Hillary Clinton and insinuated she violated the law when using unsecured email servers to send classified communications and documents. Still, he said no reasonable prosecutor would file charges. Then, the Trump collusion story and two partisan impeachments followed.

For years, the GOP has been the party that backed and supported the police. In 2020, the defund the police movement took hold among Democrats who enacted the policy across the country. What unfolded was chaos on the streets of America’s cities. In the wake of the FBI raid, many Conservatives have grown tired of what they feel is corrupt and partisan leadership at America’s largest law enforcement agency. Some Republicans called on Congress to reduce funds to the FBI or eliminate and replace it with something else. Still, former Vice President and potential 2024 presidential candidate Mike Pence stated it’s akin to the Left’s war on police.

Pence Compares Defund the FBI to Left’s Defund the Police

On Wednesday, August 17, at a political event in New Hampshire, Pence attempted to separate himself from those to his political Right. He said the GOP could hold the Department of Justice (DOJ), Attorney General Merrick Garland, and the FBI accountable without harming or attacking rank-and-file agents who are doing their jobs.

Pence added that the Grand Old Party stands with those who wear the badge and dress in blue from the federal government to the local level. He emphasized the attacks on the FBI must stop and that a demand to defund the agency was just as wrong as those who want to defund the police.

Additionally, the former vice president demanded Attorney General Merrick Garland release more information and publicly justify why the agency searched Trump’s home.

Conservatives Push Back on FBI

The FBI falls under the DOJ, which says its mission is to “uphold the rule of law.” Its purpose is to enforce federal laws. Still, many wonder if it’s following its mission or enacting a political agenda. If a sizable portion of the public loses confidence in the government’s ability or willingness to be fair, it hurts its credibility and potentially undermines democracy.

While some Conservatives, like Pence, push back against the idea that Congress needs to abolish or scale back the FBI, many others disagree. Reps. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Lauren Boebert (R-CO), and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) say the Democrats weaponized the FBI against Trump and his allies. They suggested saving America would require rebuilding the law enforcement agency to ensure it enforces the entire law fairly and doesn’t pick and choose sides.

So, are the defund the police movement and some Conservative calls to defund the FBI akin to one another? Will the call to reduce or eliminate the federal law enforcement agency hurt Republicans this fall?
