(UnitedVoice.com) – Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is no stranger to controversy. Throughout her career, she’s drawn attention to herself and her policies by making outrageous statements. Earlier this year, for example, she accused Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) of trying to have her killed.
That strategy was in play again this week. On Tuesday, April 20, while speaking about climate change in front of the Capitol, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez stated that climate change had come about partly as a result of “the trampling of racial justice.” Her rambling speech didn’t offer any coherent explanation of how she reached that conclusion, but she did mention the suppression of the rights of indigenous people, as well as the denial of the general right to housing, education, and healthcare. How any of that relates to the climate is anyone’s guess.
Not only is this type of discourse moronic, it’s also dangerous. As the tweet below points out, racism will cease to mean anything if people use it to describe everything. That will ultimately allow real acts of racism to go unpunished.
Climate change is caused by racism? If we keep blaming “racism” for everything wrong in the world, “concept creep” will render the word meaningless. Racism isn’t the root. “AOC now blames 'racial injustice' for the climate crisis” https://t.co/2jlF84LULK via @MailOnline

It’s past time AOC began taking her public statements more seriously, rather than just milking them for drama.
