An Olympic snowboarder has been seriously injured in Pyeongchang after he wiped out on a run. Markus Schairer was well on his way to a successful jump when he lost control, coming down on his back and neck instead of his feet.
Schairer fractured his fifth cervical vertebra during the crash, but somehow managed to finish the jump successfully without intervention or assistance. He was immediately taken to a local hospital in South Korea for treatment.
Once stabilized, the Olympic snowboarder was flown back to Austria where he is expected to spend the rest of the year recovering. Doctors continue to watch closely for signs of neurological damage or paralysis, but expect he will make a full recovery.
