Opposition to Illegal Immigration Spikes Under Joe Biden

(UnitedVoice.com) – It’s been a year, and President Joe Biden and his administration haven’t made much headway on the Southern border crisis. His open-door policy on immigration seems to be backfiring. According to a recent Gallup poll, nearly 6 in 10 Americans say they are dissatisfied with the growing number of immigrants entering the United States.

Biden’s Path to Expanding Immigration

Biden’s most effective immigration plan to date creates an 8-year track that aims to transform nearly 10.5 million unauthorized immigrants on US soil into legal citizens. The president is actively working to reverse restrictions Donald Trump first implemented during the early months of the coronavirus pandemic.

Results from Gallup’s ongoing yearly immigration poll suggest Americans on both sides of the aisle are growing more and more displeased with Biden’s decision to ramp up the flow of migrants coming into the country. In fact, it showcases a marked increase in critical attitudes towards the president’s policies.

Republican opposition to immigration increased significantly in just one year. In January of 2021, 40% of Conservative respondents said they wanted to lessen migration. Numbers gathered by Gallup in January of 2022 show that a whopping 69% of Republicans now feel the same way.

Employment Work Visas

In 2021, Biden’s pro-migration security chief, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, helped over 1.5 million economic immigrants cross the border via employment-based green cards. These individuals are permitted to work in the States for less pay than the minimum wage for legal residents of the US. While businesses often benefit from the cheap labor, it presents an added struggle for citizens actively searching for employment.

During a January 21 “Virtual Davos Agenda” speech, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen called the administration’s economic policy a “modern supply-side approach” that boosts economic growth.

According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), Americans are realizing Biden’s contradictory plan to both increase productivity and add numerous immigrant workers will hurt legal citizens’ ability to find fair-paying employment. Bringing in immigrants with employment work visas who work for less pay than an American citizen minimizes a business owner’s desire to raise productivity altogether.

Biden’s Administration

The contradictory goals Biden’s administration is striving to accomplish are likely due to differences between his administration agencies. The dichotomy may continue to fuel public disappointment over Biden’s presidency.

Biden and many of his supporters on the east coast pushed for higher wages and productivity. However, others in his circle, such as Chief of Staff Ron Klain, want to expand America’s consumer economy with cheaper workers, government aid-consumers, and high-occupancy renters.

Some experts worry that the Biden administration’s economic strategy may hurt employment opportunities, strip away career advances, and limit access to fair wages for legal citizens. There are also significant concerns that it may drive up housing costs, which are already skyrocketing as a result of the pandemic.

Overall, dissatisfaction with immigration rose to 58% across the nation over the past year. Biden’s administration continues to reverse Trump’s restrictions on the US-Mexico border. Hasn’t it become evident at this point, from both economic and human cost points of view, that the Biden administration needs to re-evaluate its strategies and change its path?
