(UnitedVoice.com) – Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) is one of the most well-known members of Congress. He’s never afraid to go toe-to-toe with his Democratic opponents, but at home, he’s just a family man. Recently, the senator and his wife went through a terrifying experience.
On Tuesday, December 6, first responders from the Houston Police Department and the fire department answered a call at the senator’s home. Dispatchers received a phone call about a 14-year-old child suffering from self-inflicted wounds to her arms. According to KXAN, security took the knife away from the teen girl, and an ambulance transported her to a hospital.
A friend of Cruz’s family told the local news the incident is a “family matter” but said the child is doing well. The senator had not commented on the incident at the time of this report, but a spokesperson from his office asked the media to respect the family’s privacy.
UPDATE: A spokesperson from Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s office says, “This is a family matter, and thankfully their daughter is okay. There were no serious injuries. The family requests that the media respect their daughter’s privacy at this time.”

People began lending their support to the senator and his family upon hearing the news. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) said he and his wife were praying for Cruz’s family.
Anna and I send blessings and support to @tedcruz, his daughter and family. As the father of three young children, I hope folks will show respect and understanding for the family’s pain and privacy. Whatever your perspective, this is a time for grace not viciousness. https://t.co/d9qekkgLjQ
