(UnitedVoice.com) – Is America already onto Joe Biden? During the 2020 presidential campaign, then-candidate Biden exclaimed that he was a moderate who defeated the socialist candidates in his party. Yet, in his first month of governing, it’s obvious he’s beholden to the Left-wing of the Democratic Party. That has some moderate Democrats worried he’s setting them up for failure.
Politicians are competitive creatures. They like to win. However, Biden isn’t concerned with winning anymore. At the end of his first term, the president will be 82 years old, and he said he was a one-term president who wants to do big things. In fact, in August 2020, Biden proclaimed he would be the most progressive president in US history.
Executive Actions Cause Concern Among Some Democrats
Anxiety is building around Biden’s policy proposals, especially illegal immigration. Some party officials stress Biden is moving too quickly to undo Trump’s immigration policies, potentially hurting them with blue-collar workers and those who will need to find work after the pandemic eases. In the first sign of unease, Senate Democrats in both Arizona and Michigan voted to prohibit undocumented immigrants from receiving stimulus checks in the COVID-19 relief package working its way through Congress.
According to a Morning Consult poll released on February 10, of President Biden’s seven least popular executive actions, five pertain to immigration. In fiscal year 2019, under President Trump, the US allowed a record-low 15,000 people to enter the country. However, Biden is prepared to give the country whiplash as he wants to allow a historic high of 125,000 refugees.
What do voters think of that? Only 39% of voters approved, and a whopping 48% opposed Biden’s plan.
However, that’s not all. Only 46% approved of Biden’s plan to pause President Trump’s policy to keep immigrants in Mexico until they’re approved to come into the United States.
GOP Ready to Make Immigration a Central Platform
During a pandemic, Republicans would argue, Biden and the Democrats are looking out for illegal immigrants at the expense of the millions of Americans out of work due to governor-induced shutdowns. The GOP is poised to show the Biden administration immigration policies are reckless and harmful for economic recovery, public safety, and public health. While the nation is closed due to a pandemic, Democrats are opening the border.
Assuming the Morning Consult poll is evidence of a potential backlash against Democrats, it could explain why Democratic Moderates in both chambers of Congress are skeptical about moving immigration reform policy along too quickly.
As America prepares for the 2022 midterm elections, illegal immigration will likely be one point of many that Republicans use to expose an out-of-touch Democratic Party.
