YouTube’s increasingly strict rules around content are restricting gun owners and gun sellers from monetizing their videos. The move is part of a year-long crackdown by YouTube after advertising sellers grew weary of seeing their ads placed on videos they disagreed with or that caused public relations issues. As gun lovers and sellers move away from the platform, they are finding a new home somewhere very surprising: PornHub.

Key Facts

• YouTube’s newly announced restrictions came recently, and are surprisingly strict. The platform is banning videos containing instructions on how to make firearms, bump stocks and accessories completely. Videos expected to be selling or marketing firearms (including reviews from sellers) will be demonetized and may be banned based on their content.
• YouTube will also place a ban on videos involving guns that contain links to sellers or purchasing options in the description. Sellers who avoid this and attempt to get around the ban by simply showcasing how to use or install accessories will also find themselves banned.
• PornHub, for their part, has stepped up to welcome gun sellers in a big way. Not only will they be able to use the platform without fear of being banned, but the allowed content will be much more extensive and free compared to YouTube.
• One comment from gun retailer Spike Hub summed up the reaction from gun sellers succinctly. “The Liberal Left will slowly chip away at our freedoms and erode our rights, and the first step is to squelch our voice. To say we’re f*cking pissed is an understatement.”
• PornHub’s Terms of Service say nothing about removing content with firearms. The platform only indicates that they remove content for “blackmail, intimidation, revenge porn and copyright infringement.”
