Rep. Ayanna Pressley Wants to Revamp the Prison System

Rep. Ayanna Pressley, a member of AOC’s “squad” introduced a resolution on Thursday that calls for major changes to America’s legal system.

The resolution, which she calls “The People’s Justice Guarantee,” calls for a ban on assault weapons, life sentences without parole, allowing transgender people to choose a jail/prison that fits their gender identity and making prostitution legal.

In a press release Pressley said, “For far too long, those closest to the pain have not been closest to the power, resulting in a racist, xenophobic, rogue, and fundamentally flawed criminal legal system. Our resolution calls for a bold transformation of the status quo – devoted to dismantling injustices so that the system is smaller, safer, less punitive, and more humane.”

Pressley’s plan also includes other issues that aren’t related to criminal justice, such as pushing the Green New Deal, a repeal of the Hyde Amendment and giving reparations for slavery.

Pressley has received a lot of support from her fellow Dems and progressive organizations like the ACLU.
