Rep. George Santos Assigned to 2 Committees Despite Calls to Resign

(UnitedVoice.com) – Roughly a week after New York Republicans called on Rep. George Santos (R-NY) to resign, the House Steering Committee embraced him. The committee, run by Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), gave him his assignments for his first term. However, his troubles are far from over.

On Tuesday, January 17, party leadership informed Santos he would serve on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology and the Small Business Committee. The announcement was unsurprising. NPR reported Speaker McCarthy had previously stated he would allow the freshman House member to sit on a committee because NY “voters have elected George Santos.”

Although McCarthy said he would allow Santos to sit on a committee, the new Speaker also made it clear that he doesn’t trust him. The GOP leader stated that he didn’t “see any way that [Santos is] going to have top secret [information.]” There’s little chance of the Republican receiving any top-secret briefings on either of the committees on which he’s sitting. The GOP leader also said the new lawmaker must stand before the House Ethics Committee, where he will face an investigation.

The controversy surrounding Santos stems from reports that he lied about much of his resume during the campaign. For example, he said he was Jewish but later claimed he was “Jew-ish.” He also said his mother worked in the World Trade Center’s South Tower on September 11, 2001. However, records show she was not even in New York. Santos has also admitted to lying about graduating from college and working for two major Wall Street banks.

A Navy veteran, Rich Osthoff, recently accused the congressman of pocketing money from a GoFundMe account meant to save the vet’s dog. Santos has denied stealing from Osthoff.

The congressman called the allegations about the dog “insane.”
