(UnitedVoice.com) – A GOP senator has warned that cyber attacks like last week’s shutdown of the Colonial pipeline pose an “existential threat” to the US – and the Biden administration’s green energy plans will make us even more vulnerable.

On May 16, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) told WABC that the May 7 attack – which shut down the pipeline, and 45% of the East Coast’s fuel supplies, for more than a week – exposed “how incredibly vulnerable” our energy supply really is. The attack, which the FBI says was carried out by the Russia-based hacker group DarkSide, was criminally motivated. The attackers infected Colonial’s systems with ransomware and demanded a payoff. However, Democrat proposals could open up new routes for an attacker who wants to harm the country.
In April, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) brought the controversial “Green New Deal” bill back to Congress. This bill would force a huge swing towards renewable energy, making us more reliant on electricity to replace fossil fuels. That, says Johnson, makes the electrical grid an easier and more tempting target than ever. “No administration has paid sufficient attention to the vulnerabilities of our electrical grid,” he warned. It doesn’t look like the current one will change that.
