Several States Declare War on COVID Lockdowns

( – It was nearly one year ago that then-President Trump hesitantly put America on a short lockdown to help the medical system prepare for COVID-19. Weeks later, Trump recommended the country re-open. He warned that the cure shouldn’t be worse than the disease. Fortunately, America may be close to a breakthrough, and according to numerous doctors and health officials, herd immunity could be around the corner.

As optimism grows, several states are fully re-opening for business. Republican governors lead all of them. It’s setting up a severe contrast regarding how to handle the pandemic and could lead to questions about the wisdom of severe lockdowns that destroyed livelihoods. That may be why California’s governor is striking out against the reopenings. It’s a new war of rhetoric heating up about who’s right and wrong about the COVID lockdowns.

Texas Reopens 100%, and It’s Not Alone

Florida was the first state to return to a sense of normalcy starting late last fall. On Tuesday, March 2, Texas joined Florida and several other states as Republican Gov. Greg Abbott declared his state is open 100%. He rescinded all COVID-19 mitigation orders — including the mask mandate.

Texas isn’t alone in reopening its economy and reclaiming a sense of normalcy. Mississippi, Iowa, and Montana are also lifting mask mandates and reopening quickly. Louisiana, Michigan, and Pennsylvania are easing restrictions on bars and other businesses but still require masks.

California Governor Strikes Out as COVID-19 Numbers Drop Significantly

Over the last two months, US cases of COVID-19 dropped by more than 70%. Since mid-January, deaths per day decreased by approximately 40%. Over the last year, experts have estimated that up to half of America may have been infected with COVID-19. Taking all of that into consideration, plus the growing number of vaccinations, has led some health experts and doctors to believe herd immunity could occur anytime from April to mid-summer.

Despite some health experts’ claims that a light could be at the end of the tunnel, California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is striking out. He’s facing a potential recall over his harsh COVID-19 mitigation orders as some communities in the Golden State are fighting back.

After Texas’ announcement they were reopening, Newsom called the action “absolutely reckless.” In addition, former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke” called the state’s decision a “death warrant.” Former US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Julian Castro said the decision wasn’t based on science at all.

Over the next few months, the rhetoric is likely to heat up as vaccination numbers grow and people want to get back to normal. Democrats may continue to exert power over their constituents as Republicans call for personal responsibility and offer more liberties. After a year of lockdowns, frustrated Americans may not care. They just want to live their lives free and safe.
