It happens all the time. You walk into the store looking for one or two items, and you come out with three or four bags — which may or may not include the items you went in for in the first place. To manage your money better, you’ve got to change that habit and shop like you’re on a mission.
Make a list before you shop. You can do it on your phone or on a piece of paper, but not just in your mind. It’s too easy to add something when it’s in your mind. A list means you can check things off as you go and even review the list before you leave so you make sure you’re getting what you need rather than just what you want.
It might also be time to stop shopping with friends. A friend might pick out something they want and the next thing you know, you want one too. Or maybe you have that friend who thinks everything looks great on you and so you end up buying something you don’t really need or want just because you want to look good.
When it comes time for grocery shopping, you can avoid overspending on things you don’t need by sticking with the perimeter of the store. That’s where you usually find meat, dairy, and bread products along with fruits and vegetables. Most of the items on the shelves in the center are snack products and sweet items that are bad for you to begin with.
Make a few adjustments to your shopping habits and you’ll find that you end up staying within your budget. You may even spend less than you expected.
