Trump Floats Being House Speaker on Truth Social

(UnitedVoice.com) – A new session of Congress should have begun last week after lawmakers returned from their end-of-the-year break. Members went to the floor to carry out a simple vote for House Speaker — or so they thought, but it didn’t turn out that way. While lawmakers were desperately trying to elect a leader so that they could begin their session, former President Donald Trump got in on the drama.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) lost the votes to become Speaker of the House more than a dozen times before finally winning. At one point, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) even nominated Trump as Speaker.

In response, the former president had a little bit of fun. In a TRUTH media post, he shared a picture of himself acting as Speaker of the House. The photo depicted him standing behind President Joe Biden at a State of the Union Address with his tongue hanging out.

Although the idea of nominating and conforming Trump as Speaker seems absurd at first glance, it’s actually not out of the realm of possibility.

Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution explains the parameters for the positions in the House of Representatives, including Speaker. It states, “The House of Representatives shall choose their speaker and other officers.”

That’s it. There are zero qualifications to become House Speaker. That means lawmakers could nominate whoever they want, and as long as they reach a consensus, that person could become the leader in the lower chamber.

Though it would certainly have been interesting to see Trump lead the House, it’s not happening this time. Early Saturday morning, McCarthy finally won on the 15th round of voting. He is now serving in the coveted leadership role.
