US Troops Training for Possible Combat in Ukraine
(UnitedVoice.com) – In 1944, the Army’s 101st Airborne Division helped end WWII when it parachuted into Normandy, France, on D-Day. The Army is deploying the Screaming Eagles to Europe for the first time since the second world war. Now, they’re training to take on Russia if need be.
Over the summer, the US deployed about 4,700 members of the 101st Airborne to Europe to support our allies. The decision came months after Russia invaded Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly spoken out against the international alliance, saying that an expansion of NATO would threaten his country. New reports indicate the US infantry fighters who deployed are participating in war games to ready themselves to defend allied nations.
Reporters with CBS News recently boarded a Black Hawk helicopter to tour NATO territory with 101st Airborne Deputy Commander for Operations Brigadier General John Lubas and 2nd Brigade Combat Team Commander Colonel Edwin Matthaidess. The tour took place along Romania’s border with Ukraine. Lubas said his division is “ready to defend every inch of NATO soil.”
US and Romanian troops held a training exercise that included real artillery fire and tank rounds. It recreated battles in which the Ukrainians were already engaging. But more than that, the American military means to send a message to Russia. The commanders made one point clear: The US military is “ready to fight tonight” if there is any attack on NATO.
