A family from Oklahoma who was traveling home from their vacation in Mexico was attacked at the border over the weekend.
They were on a highway in an area that has some of the country’s worst drug cartels. According to reports, armed gunmen killed a 13-year-old child and hurt three other members of the family. The attack occurred in Mier with Nueva Ciudad Guerrero, located close to Falcon Heights, Texas.
An official with the US State Department issued a statement, saying:
“We can confirm that one U.S. citizen was killed, and two U.S. citizens injured, in an attack in Tamaulipas, Mexico on January 4. We offer our sincerest condolences to the family on their loss, and we are providing them all appropriate consular assistance. We are closely monitoring local authorities’ investigation into this brutal attack. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we have no further comment at this time.”
This attack comes only two months after nine Americans were killed in Mexico after they were visiting relatives.
The State Department issued a travel advisory in December telling Americans who decide to travel to Mexico to exercise caution due to the violent crimes taking place in the country.
