(UnitedVoice.com) – American foreign policy has fallen into disarray in recent years. Ineffectual relations with Mexico have led to an unprecedented problem at the nation’s southern border. President Joe Biden continues to devote time, money, and resources to Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un continues to provoke the US and other Western countries by testing advanced missile systems, including some ICBMs that reportedly can reach the Continental United States.
Likewise, Iran continues advancing its nuclear weapons program, and China appears hellbent on testing American resolve to defend itself and maintain its status as the world’s leading power. In fact, China’s ruling Communist Party (the CCP) hasn’t been bashful about its ambition to become the top economic and political superpower by the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 2049.
Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH), the head of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, recently addressed his concerns regarding increased Chinese aggression.
House Intelligence Committee Chair Weighs In
On Sunday, June 4, Rep. Turner sat down for a wide-ranging interview with ABC’s “This Week” host Martha Raddatz. The conversation turned to Chinese military posturing in the wake of several CCP spy balloons traversing the US earlier this year, a Chinese fighter jet flying directly in front of a US reconnaissance plane the previous weekend, and a PRC warship provoking a US Navy destroyer by crossing its path on Saturday.
Turner told Raddatz that what American officials are seeing is a display of “unbelievable aggression” on the part of China. Elaborating, he noted that China’s aggressive posture in breaching American airspace and provoking US air and sea operations in international water “goes right to the heart” of remarks made by President Xi Jinping during a recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Intelligence Committee Chairman recounted that Xi confirmed China was trying to facilitate a change that hadn’t happened for 100 years. Continuing, Turner explained that “change” referred to WWI and WWII — the battle between “democracy” and “authoritarianism.”
China Trying to Flex Its Muscles
Turner warned that Chinese officials are “trying to … flex their muscles and advance authoritarianism.” He urged the Biden Administration to take a “strong stand” against that kind of “coercion.”
Pointing to recent Chinese provocations, Turner concluded his remarks by urging the White House to “step up” and acknowledge the PRC’s efforts to identify itself as an “adversary” to American security and goals. He also suggested that it was high time that President Joe Biden started treating Chinese officials accordingly.
