(UnitedVoice.com) – President Joe Biden has proposed a $106 billion security package to provide funding for Ukraine, Israel, and other important issues. There’s been a lot of back and forth in Congress on the deal. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to Washington, DC, recently to speak to lawmakers and called for results.
On December 12, Zelenskyy met with Republican and Democratic lawmakers on a trip to the US capital. He was there to ask lawmakers and the president to send more aid to his country to help them fight Russia. The neighboring country invaded Ukraine in February 2022. As 2023 winds down and the Eastern European countries barrel towards the second anniversary of the conflict, Ukraine is running out of military equipment to fight.
The White House previously informed lawmakers that funding to provide Ukraine with vital military aid would run out by the end of the year. Zelenskyy spent hours speaking to lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Republicans have demanded that Biden implement tougher border policies to stem the flow of illegal aliens into America before they approve money to help Ukraine.
After Zelenskyy met with Biden and lawmakers, he spoke to the press and sounded hopeful about the future. He reportedly received vocal support from lawmakers in both parties and the White House. However, he said he knows he has to “separate words and, in particular, results.”
Zelenskyy said he’s “count[ing] on particular results.”
President Biden recently said that he has offered to compromise with Republicans, but he disagrees with their strategy to hold “funding hostage in an attempt to force through an extreme Republican partisan agenda on the border is not how it works.”
Lawmakers have tried for years to fix the immigration system, but none have been successful. It’s not clear if there will be a breakthrough this time, either. But Zelenskyy desperately needs there to be if he has any hope of preventing Russian President Vladimir Putin from taking over his country.
