A routine highway breakdown in the Arizona desert turned into a massive fireball that torched 30 acres in minutes and shut down a key route many of us drive.
Story Snapshot
- A vehicle exploded along State Route 87 and immediately sparked the Round Valley Wildfire, burning about 30 acres.
- Officials say the car fire caused the blaze, but still have not explained what made the vehicle erupt in the first place.
- State Route 87 was closed in both directions for about two hours, stranding drivers and disrupting travel in a major corridor.
- Arizona fire and transportation agencies admit many wildfires are caused by vehicles, raising questions about basic safety and maintenance.
Vehicle fire on SR 87 explodes into 30-acre wildfire
Video from an eyewitness shows a vehicle already burning on the shoulder of State Route 87, north of the Phoenix area, when it suddenly erupts into a huge fireball that sends flames and debris into the nearby brush.[3] Within moments, dry desert grass along the highway is burning, and what started as one disabled vehicle becomes the Round Valley Fire. State transportation officials later confirmed that this single vehicle fire sparked the wildfire along the busy corridor.[1]
According to a report from a Phoenix television station, the Arizona Department of Transportation said a car fire caused the Round Valley Wildfire on Wednesday, June 24, and forced them to shut down both directions of State Route 87.[1] The highway, which many families and truckers use to reach the Rim Country and beyond, was closed for about two hours as smoke and flames moved along the southbound side of the road. Drivers sat in growing heat while crews rushed to contain the blaze.
Fire crews stop the flames, but the cause of blast still unknown
Hotshot firefighters from the Tonto National Forest moved in quickly and were able to stop the forward progress of the Round Valley Fire after it burned about 30 acres of brush along the southbound lanes.[5] Officials say the fire stayed on the roadside and did not reach homes, thanks to the crews and the natural breaks near the highway. Even so, thirty acres is not a “small” event in dry, windy conditions, and it shows how fast a single spark can get out of control.
Despite clear video of the explosion and fast statements about the wildfire’s cause, authorities still have not said what made the vehicle catch fire in the first place.[1] Reporters note there is “no word” yet on whether a mechanical failure, poor maintenance, an electrical problem, or a fuel issue triggered the blaze inside the vehicle. That gap in the story leaves room for guesswork, even as agencies confidently link the burning vehicle to the brush fire. So far, there is also no confirmed public report about injuries.
Highway cars are now a major wildfire risk in the desert
Arizona wildfire prevention officials have warned for years that vehicles are one of the most common human causes of fires in our state, especially along busy highways lined with dry grass.[8] Sparks from dragging trailer chains, rims from flat tires hitting pavement, overheated engines, and vehicles pulling off into tall weeds can all shower hot metal or exhaust onto fuels that are ready to burn.[8] Federal fire safety experts add that vehicle fires are a persistent problem nationwide, driven by fuel systems, electrical faults, and poor upkeep.[6]
State transportation officials point out that this is not the first time this exact highway corridor has seen vehicle-caused fires, including past incidents on State Route 87 where dragging chains or trailers started brush fires in nearly the same area.[13] Local towing and safety guidance in Arizona notes that neglecting basic vehicle maintenance, ignoring repairs, or letting systems overheat can raise the chance of a car fire dramatically.[7] When those bad habits meet extreme heat, wind, and dense roadside brush, families and property downwind pay the price while government agencies scramble to respond.
